Barbara Winkelstein was a prolific portrait painter whose work captured the emotional essence of her subjects with warmth, empathy, and quiet insight. Working in gouache, charcoal, graphite, oil stick, and watercolor, her work was exhibited in galleries throughout San Francisco and is held in private collections around the world. In later years she worked from a shared studio at San Francisco's Pier 70, painting live models and California landscapes she loved. Born in Coalinga, California, she lived in Venezuela and Colorado, earned a BA from the University of Oregon, settled in San Francisco in 1956, and remained there until she passed in November 2011.
